Storytime for 2 and 3 yr old: Happy St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is tomorrow, so we had an early celebration. The children heard three stories ( Green Shamrocks  by Eve Bunting,My Very First Look at Shapes by Christine Gunzi  and The Luckiest St. Patrick's Day Ever by Teddy Slater). The kids also learned about shapes, waves scarves, and made a Shamrock Buddy.

Here are some of the songs we did today:

This Little Leprechaun added 8-7-97 Original Author Unknown
This little leprechaun slid down the rainbow, (Point to thumb.)
This little leprechaun stayed home. (Point to index finger.)
This little leprechaun picked a shamrock, (Point to middle finger.)
This little leprechaun found some gold. (Point to ring finger.)
This little leprechaun cried, "See if you can catch me," (Point to little finger.)
As he ran home. (Wiggle little finger.)

Go On A Leprechaun Hunt added 3-9-98 Original Author Unknown
(an adaptation of the Bear Hunt)
Ask the children to listen closely and follow the directions. Instruct
them to clap the rhythm or slap their knees as you tell the story.

Going on a leprechaun hunt. I'm not afraid.
Let's go! Oh. look! I see a grassy field.
Can't go around it. Can't go under it. Can't go over it. Let's go through it.
Let's go! Swish, swish, swish, swish.
Oh, look! I see a giant tree.
Can't go over it. Can't go under it. Can't go through it. Let's climb it.
Let's go! Climb, climb, climb.
Oh, look! I see a river.
Can't go over it. Can't go around it. Can't go under it. Let's Swim it.
Let's go. Swim, swim, swim.
Oh, look! I see a dark cave.
Can't go around it. Can't go under it. Can't go over it. Let's tiptoe into it.
Let's go. Tippy, tippy, toe.
It's really dark in here. Better turn on my flashlight.
Oh, no. I see something!
It's mean! It's green! It's a leprechaun! Let's go!
Run! Run! Swim! Swim! Climb! Climb! Swish! Swish!
Whew...safe at home again.

Book Review: The Secret Life of Squirrles-Nancy Rose

Mr. Peanut is no ordinary squirrel. Instead of gathering nuts or climbing trees, he plays the piano and cooks on the grill. But he is very lonely. So one day he sends a letter to his cousin, requesting a visit. And oh what fun they have.

I love this cute, odd book of squirrels playing with doll furniture ( especially the grill and hot dogs!!) A wonderful book about friendship, there are tips on to take pictures of wildlife and an interview with author/photographer Rose. ( By the way, she also has a website, The Secret Life of Squirrels, where you can see more of Mr. Peanut and friends in action.)

The Secret Life of Squirrels by Nancy Rose
Age Range: 3 and up
***** ( 5 Stars)

Want more books featuring squirrels? Here are some recommendations:

  • Miss You Like Crazy by Pamela Hall
  • Nuts to You by Lynne R. Perkins
  • The Busy Little Squirrel  by Nancy Tafuri
  • The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by Beatrix Potter

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Seuss on the Loose

For today's storytime we celebrated  Dr. Seuss's birthday ( aka Theodor Seuss Geisel, born  March 2, 1904, died September 24, 1991). The kids heard two of his books, Mr. Brown Can Moo Can You? and There's a Wocket in my Pocket. They also counted some frogs, shook some eggs, and made their own Wockets in Pockets.

Here are some of the songs we did for today-

A Chubby Little Snowman added 11-30-98 Original Author Unknown
A chubby little snowman,
Had a carrot nose.
Along came a bunny,
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny,
Looking for his lunch.
Ate that snowman's carrot nose,
Nibble, nibble, crunch!!

Spring Time added 3-12-98 Original Author Unknown
Sung to: "Did you Ever see a Lassie?"
My- eyes can see it's spring-time, it's spring-time, it's spring-time.
my- eyes can see it's spring-time, the grass is so green!

The green grass, the flowers, the sunshine and showers.
My- eyes can see it's spring-time and I am so glad.

My-ears can hear it's spring time, it's spring time, it's spring time.
My- ears can hear it's spring-time, the birds sweetly sing.
The birds sing, the lambs bleat, the frogs croak, the bees buzz.
My- ears can hear it's spring time, and I am so glad.

My-body can feel's it's spring time, it's spring time, it's spring time.
my-body can feel its spring time, the air is so warm.
The warm air, the breez-es, no frost and no freez-es.
My- body can feel it's spring time, and I am so glad!
