Book Review: Roc and Roe's 12 Days of Christmas-Nick Cannon

It's the holiday season and Morroccan (Roc) and Monroe (Roe) Cannon are ready to deck the halls!!  They're going to decorate the tree with choo choo trains, festive fairies and an angel with sparkly, shiny wings! Yippee.

This is a cute, modern take on the Christmas carol "The 12 days of Christmas". I love AG Ford's Saturday morning-looking artwork of Nick Cannon and Mariah Carery's twins ( who make a cameo in the book) and all the stuff that they add to the tree (most of which is clumped at the bottom). It's also good to use for story times because the kids will know the song (and they help you count).

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Boo to You!

 Today we celebrated Halloween a few weeks early. The kid ( yep, this year was an audience of one parent, one kid, still fun) heard two stories ( Click Clack Boo: A Tricky Treat by Doreen Cronin and Boo to You  by Lois Ehlert), had some fun with scarves and a visit from the Five Little Pumpkins ( who will making a stop at tomorrow's Mother Goose on the Loose).

Today was our second Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds and we celebrate fall. The children heard three stories ( We're Going on A Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger, My Very First Look at Colors by Christiane Gunzi, and Moon  Glowing by Elizabeth Partridge). We also shook scarves to two songs from Johnette Downing's Second Line Scarf Activity Songs CD) and made an Autumn Bear picture.

Bookworm List: Come to the Fair!!

Summer is slowly approaching it's end. But before the shorts and flip flops are put away for pants and school shoes, there still some summer fun to be had... at the fair grounds!!. During the late summer and early fall months, states across the country will holding their state fairs for local farmers and other agricultural groups to show off their livestock and farm products. ( In fact, this Friday marks the start of two fairs: Lake County Fair in Crown Point ( August 1-10) and the Indiana State Fair (August 1-17) in Indianapolis.For more info, please click on link to their websites.)

For those wondering how and why states have state fairs, here's some info I picked up by way of Wikipedia ( click link to see full article). In short, they started in the 19th century for promoting state agriculture ( or farming) by way of livestock and farm product shows. Over the years, they have grown include carnival rides, games, and live entertainment. The first state fair happened in Syracuse, New York in 1841 ( and continues to run annually each year.)

We have a few books on state fairs on display in our ABC-123 box. Here are some of the titles:

Bookworm List: Egg-cellent Reads ( plus movies!!)

Well, I'm hoping Tuesday was the last time we'll see snow (or else the Easter Bunny will be wearing a coat and boots to hide the eggs and deliver the baskets of jellybeans, chocolates and Peeps. I have the new Birthday Cake Peeps, good to add to coffee! Or yes, explode in the microwave but what a mess!)

So after the egg hunts and gathering with family for ham ( or lamb) and bunny cake, you'll probably want to wind down with some Easter and spring-related books. Here are a few recommendations, which you might find on our display shelf by the front desk or the ABC box by the New Book Elephant (which might also have some new Easter/spring books):

• *NEW* Pete the Cat: Big Easter Adventure by Kimberly and James Dean- Pete the Cat helps the Easter Bunny decorate the eggs and hide them ( plus dress like a bunny. A cat dressed like a bunny, now that's funny!!!)

• The Easter Bunny's Assistant by Jan Thomas-The Easter Bunny has a new assistant named Skunk and he's going to help decorate the eggs. But when he gets excited, it....stinks!!

• *NEW*Here Comes Peter Cottontail by Kristen Depken- Picture book adaptation of the  1971 Rankin-Bass cartoon.

• Easter Parade by Irving Berlin ( illustrated by Lisa McCue) Picture book adaptation of the classic Irving Berlin song from the movie Easter Parade ( lyrics included at the back. Kind of wished it came with a CD for those not familiar with the song, especially because it features the lesser-known opening verse.)

Now, the kids might also want some Easter/ spring related movies. This... might be hard because unfortunately, most people think religious ( most of which are too much to handle due to subject material and length. The classic Ten Commandments, airing this Saturday on ABC is 4 hours long!!!). And of what there is bunny and eggs, very hard to find ( there were about 10 or so special back in my 80s-90s childhood, like Peter and the Magic Egg and Family Circus Easter. Plus ABC used to air the Walt Disney Easter Parade, featuring Southern Belles and a sing-along to Peter Cottontail or Easter Parade. Check the Youtube). So here is my best recommendations that I can think of:

• It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown!- Love Snoopy and the dancing bunnies ( plus Patty's attempt to teach Marcie to die eggs.) It will be airing this Sunday on ABC at 6 pm ( along with a Charlie Brown baseball cartoon)
• Here comes Peter Cottontail- Based off the book The Easter Bunny that Overslept, it's the story of how the Easter Bunny came to be (and sort of a sequel to Santa Claus is Coming to Town because it features the mailman voiced by Fred Astaire.)
• Prince of Egypt- For those that want Moses but not the long movie, there is 1998 Dreamworks musical cartoon featuring the voices of Val Kilmer and Patrick Stewart. 
• Alice in Wonderland- The Disney 1951 animated movie (or the lesser-known 1985 CBS TV-movie with Carol Channing, Sammy Davis Jr., and  a bunch of big stars, which we have over at Dyer, Hobart, Lake-Station, and Munster ) are my favorite takes on the Lewis Carroll tale ( and actually I am using the Disney soundtrack for my Easter program this Monday). The 2010 Tim Burton is okay ( but more appropriate for Halloween because of Burton freakiness).

I am also recommending a few movie musicals that take place during the 1800-1900s, like Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady,Gigi, Mary Poppins, Newsies and of course, Easter Parade. ( Why? Because the Victorian/Edwardian clothes and designs show up in a lot of Easter decorations and some of the songs from these musicals, especially " Easter Parade" and " Put on Your Sunday Clothes" are used alot in Easter parades.)


 We will be open tomorrow and Saturday at our normal hours but closed Sunday due to the Easter holiday.

Book Review: The Easter Bunny's Assistant-Jan Thomas

 

The Easter Bunny has a new assistant. His name is Skunk, and today they're going to be showing the kids how to make beautiful Easter eggs. Decorating eggs is very exciting, but when Skunk gets excited, it...stinks.

Once again, Jan Thomas has created another funny, LOL book. It is very cute , full of bright colors and big, big print. Also like that the steps are repeated again in the back ( and with more specifics and when an adult's help is required.)

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Welcome to Winspring!

Mother Nature must be playing a lovely trick. It's March, but it's winspring ( winter-spring, sounds more magical than spinter) where it's sunny and bright but cold and white. The children heard three stories ( When Will it Be Spring? by Catherine Walters,Over in the Meadow by Jane Cabrera, and Snowmen all Year ( the blog's first post!!!) by Caralynn Buehner). We also played with scarves, counted some frogs, and make a snowflake flower ( brightly-colored snowflake turned into a flower by way of a stem and leaf.)

It's the end of February, almost March. It's still cold and white ( and according to the weathermen, more to come for the next three weeks.) But here in the Children's Department, it's spring!!!

Yes, the books of winter and Valentine's Day have left the shelves to make room for shamrocks, flowers, and bunnies (Awwwwwwwwww!!) Here are some of the featured titles-

Book review: When It Snows- Richard Collingridge

 

One magical snowy night, a young boy and his teddy bear journey to a faraway land. They see snowman built as high as the sky , fairies in a dark and gloomy forest ruled by the Queen of the Poles, and elves helping giant reindeer and Santa get ready for his big night.

This is a wonderful picture book, with a very surprising ending. I love the author/illustrator's use of shadow and light to create a land that is both magical and haunting (and makes me really want to go there). It reminds me of The Polar Express ( possibly better because the language and short and sweet, so might be using this next November/ December.) A perfect read for cold winter nights.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Winter is Fun!

Today was the first 2 and 3 yr old story time of 2014. Although cold outside, we had some winter fun with a few stories ( Mouse's First Snow by Lauren Thompson, My Very First Look at Colors by Christiane Gunzi, and Snowball Fight by Jimmy Fallon). We also learned about color from the Color Birds and made a winter hat.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yrs old: Holiday Fun!

Today was our first of two ( yes, this December, two) holiday programs. The children listened to three stories ( It's Christmas by Tina Burke, The Twelve Days of Christmas Dogs by Caroyln Conahan and new for 2013, Frosty the Snowman by Steve Nelson ( illustrations by Wade Zahares). We also rang some bells to three Christmas carols and made a Frosty the Snowman picture with fluff and a little Christmas dust.

Our last program for 2013 will be Monday, December 16 at 10 am. We'll be ringing in 2014 a wee bit early at 10:20 am with the Christmas Hippo and a Stuffed Animal Drop. Keep a look out for our January-February dates for 2014.

This Saturday, we will be showing a Disney Christmas movie from noon to 2 in Meeting Room A. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult 18 yrs or older. You can bring a lunch or snack and a drink, but no dark or red-colored drinks.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Thanksgiving with a Twist

Today we  celebrated Thanksgiving one week early ( also, we did a little bit of  Hanukkah because this year the first full day falls on Thanksgiving and this is one and only time this is happening in this lifetime.Don't ask, all has to do with the Jewish calender slowly becoming slower than ours.) Our small group of 4 kids and 4 parents got to hear three stories ( Thanksgiving is Here by Diane Goode, My Very First Look at Sizes by Christiane Gunzi, and Happy Sparkling Hanukkah by Elizabeth Spurr.) We also did a little bell  ringing and made a turkey handprint.

Book Review- Awesome Autumn- Bruce Goldstone

 

Why do leaves change color in the fall? How does frost form?  These and more questions are answered in Awesome Autumn, a book that looks at all aspects of fall, from the changes in animals to the sights, sounds and shapes of autumn.

I love fall, and this book does a great job of reminding us of how "awesome" autumn is. This book is filled with wonderful information ( plus wonderful pictures) on everything from viewing the seasons from different senses ( love the use of big print and photos in the words for the sounds of autumn) to the two major holidays of the fall- Halloween and Thanksgiving. We also get some art activities (plus the instructions) at the end.

A perfect read aloud for all ages.

Leaves and Pumpkins and Monsters, oh my! Fall must be here.

Yes, the books that celebrate autumn and Halloween are slowly creeping into the book display area ( still have some back to school books to check out). Time for wooly sweaters and pumpkin lattes, apples and monster masks.

Here are some recommended reads-

• Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert-A man made of leaves travels the autumn landscape. Made on die-cut pages, this is a great book for preschool reads.
• I Know It's Autumn by Elieen Spinelli- A rhyming celebration of all the things the autumn season brings, from acorn puppets, hay rides, and more.
• Nuts by Paula Gerritsen- A young mouse braves an autumn storm to collect nuts for the winter.
• Sara Squirrel and The Lost Acorn by Julie Skyes- When Sara goes to look for acorns, her friends want her to bring back stuff, too.
