Book Review: Your Baby's First Word will be Dada!!-Jimmy Fallon

For most new moms and dads, when their child starts talking, they hope their first word will be "Mama" or " Dada". But in the animal world, it is most likely that a piglet will " Oink", a puppy will " Woof" and a duckling will " Quack". And while it might be frustrating, in time ( and in some form), they may one day say " Dada".

This is a really cute book from Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show. I love the oddly-cute animals like the triangular-shaped mice and the half-circle chickens. I would have like a bit of a plot, but I'm assuming that the intended audience is for the under 3 set, they can just point at the pictures and say the animal sounds in the bubbles (or  perhaps I could use  this for the animal/farm section of Mother Goose on the Loose.) Perfect for new dads.

Book Review: Bow Wow's Nightmare Neighbors-Mark Newgarden

About 7-8 yrs ago when I did my first outreach programs at the Merrillville public schools, I read a wordless, comic-like picture book called Bow Wow Bugs a Bug, in which a little yellow dog had some fun with a flea.  In his latest adventure, Bow Wow ventures to a spooky house to deal with some cats who bit him on the tail while napping and stole his doggie bed. With creeks and scares around very corner ( not to mention an even bigger tail-biting cat ), can Bow Wow retrieve his bed on a dark and stormy night?

Like the first Bow Wow, I laughed and laughed my head off ( plus felt the need to make spooky sounds and spooky music, like "Dun-Dun-DUNNNNN"). I'll have to keep this book in mind for upcoming Halloween programs ( or when things go bump in the night).

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr old: Love Your Mama

For our final 2 and 3 program for Spring 2015, we celebrated moms ( since this Sunday is Mother's Day). The kids heard three books ( A Little Bit of Love by Cynthia Platt, Over in the Meadow by Olive Wadsworth, and When Mama Comes Home Tonight by Eileen Spinelli), rang some bells, and made a handprint card for their mom.

 This summer, Storytime for 2 and 3 will be  every Tuesday starting June 9 at 10 am, followed by 4 and 5's Storytime at 11: 15 am.  Starting Monday, June 8 at 6 pm, we will be having a Family Storyhour.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: A Day at the Pond

 Well, the weather almost a damper to our pond visit, but it happened ( rambunctious toddlers and all). The kids heard three stories ( Do Like a Duck Does  by Judy Hindley , Kipper's Book of Opposites  by Mick Inkpen, and Trout Trout Trout by April Pulley Sayre), tap some sticks, and made a rainbow fish.

Usually with the crafts, I like to play some background music ( and normally something that is tied to the program theme besides the activity CD). So with pond, I figure bluegrass ( even though I am not a bluegrass fan) and found Sarah Jarosz  Song Up in her Head  ( because of the cute cover). Here is one of the tracks, enjoy.

 

Our last  Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds for Spring 2015  is Monday, May 4 at 10 am.  We'll be celebrating Moms.

Book Review: Edible Colors-Jennifer Vogel Bass

Carrots are orange but did you know they could also be purple, white, or yellow? Or how about corn being red, white, and blue besides yellow? And did you know about red bananas, blue pumpkins and Buddha's Hand? How amazing can fruit and vegetables be!!

I love this vibrant colorful book ( and am a fruit and veggie lover.) Besides being a color primer, this book encourages children to think beyond the color box and fruit and vegetables are really cool ( besides being good to eat.) I do use there was some background information on each item featured, but maybe that would be a great activity for the classroom.

Hello, hope everyone had a good Easter weekend.

Since everyone was still in an Easter mood, that's what today's story time was all about. The children heard three stories ( The World in a Candy Egg by Alvin Tresselt, My E Sound Box by Jane B. Moncure, and Easter Parade by Irving Berlin ( illustrated by Lisa McCue). We had some fun with shaking eggs and made colorful Easter egg collages.

St. Patrick's Day is tomorrow, so we had an early celebration. The children heard three stories ( Green Shamrocks  by Eve Bunting,My Very First Look at Shapes by Christine Gunzi  and The Luckiest St. Patrick's Day Ever by Teddy Slater). The kids also learned about shapes, waves scarves, and made a Shamrock Buddy.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Seuss on the Loose

 For today's storytime we celebrated  Dr. Seuss's birthday ( aka Theodor Seuss Geisel, born  March 2, 1904, died September 24, 1991). The kids heard two of his books, Mr. Brown Can Moo Can You? and There's a Wocket in my Pocket. They also counted some frogs, shook some eggs, and made their own Wockets in Pockets.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Warm Winter Hearts

Today was the first 2 and 3 yr old story time of 2014. Although cold outside, we had some winter/pre- Valentine's Day  fun with a few stories ( Winter is the Warmest Season by Lauren Stringer, The Color Box by Dayle  Ann Dodds, and A Kiss Means I Love You  by Kathryn Allen). We also learned about color from the Color Birds and made a snowman with hearts.

Today was our last storytime for 2014. We had very big crowd that wanted to celebrate the holidays. The group heard three stories ( Jingle Jingle by Nicole Smee, Ten on a Sled by Kim Norman, and I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas by John Rox). They also rang some bells and made a Jingle Hippo Ornament.

Book Review: Roc and Roe's 12 Days of Christmas-Nick Cannon

It's the holiday season and Morroccan (Roc) and Monroe (Roe) Cannon are ready to deck the halls!!  They're going to decorate the tree with choo choo trains, festive fairies and an angel with sparkly, shiny wings! Yippee.

This is a cute, modern take on the Christmas carol "The 12 days of Christmas". I love AG Ford's Saturday morning-looking artwork of Nick Cannon and Mariah Carery's twins ( who make a cameo in the book) and all the stuff that they add to the tree (most of which is clumped at the bottom). It's also good to use for story times because the kids will know the song (and they help you count).

To kick off the holiday season, today's storytime was a rocking holiday pizza party (sans pizza but it was still fun)! The children heard three stories ( Pizza at Sally's by Monica Wellington, My Very First Look at Opposites by Christiane Gunzi, and Roc and Roe's 12 Days of Christmas by Nick Cannon). We also rang some bells and made a mini pizza ornament.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr old: Hooray for Thanksgiving!!!

Today was our pre-Thanksgiving program. The kids  heard three stories   ( Thanksgiving is Here by Diane Goode, ABC I Like Me by Nancy L. Carlson, and Christmas Parade by Sandra Boynton.) We also rang some bells, learned about the letter "T" and  and made a turkey picture using our hand print and decorated with fall leaves.

Since the start of November, I have been getting into the holiday spirit (actually since Halloween because of the snow/rain mix and Hallmark started the Christmas movies). While the kids were making their turkeys, I played 40 yrs: A Charlie Brown Christmas. Here is the full album, enjoy!!

For  today's storytime , I got some inspiration from a posting I saw last year from the Kids at Cedar Lake Children's Blog and decided to have a day of art, shapes, music and motion. The kids heard Windblown by Edouard Manceau and When will the Snow Trees Grow? by Ben Shecter  and learned about shapes through My First Look at Shapes. We also had some fun with bells and made some Windblown-inspired artwork (visit  http://www.owlkidsbooks.com/Portals/0/docs/windblown-activity.pdf to get the shapes to make your own artwork.)

 Today we celebrated Halloween a few weeks early. The kid ( yep, this year was an audience of one parent, one kid, still fun) heard two stories ( Click Clack Boo: A Tricky Treat by Doreen Cronin and Boo to You  by Lois Ehlert), had some fun with scarves and a visit from the Five Little Pumpkins ( who will making a stop at tomorrow's Mother Goose on the Loose).

We also shook scarves to two songs from Johnette Downing's Second Line Scarf Activity Songs CD) and made an Autumn Bear picture.

Despite weather and traffic issues related to Officer Schultz's funeral, we still had our first 2 and 3 year old storytime for fall 2014.  I read one story (The Circus is Coming by Hillary Knight) and the craft was a carousel horse using a coloring sheet, a straw, and confetti.

We didn't do any songs or finger plays, but I felt like sharing what was planned:

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: Color Magic!!

Today's storytime was very colorful!! The group heard two stories ( Color Box by Dayle Dodds and I Ain't Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont). We also counted some monkeys and did some fun bubble wrap art.

The last day to turn in books for the Summer Reading Progam is Saturday, August 2nd.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds will be taking a break next month. Look for our fall session later in September.
