Hello all!!

So this weeks marks the start of our Summer Reading Program, Every Hero has a Story ( and runs until August 1st). This week, it's all about summer!!! Is anyone heading to the beach or planning a big vacation? Or are just planning to relax and have some fun reading before school starts?

Every Hero has a Story- June Programming

 Summer is just around the corner, and so is the library's summer reading program. Starting June 8th, and continuing until August 1st, children ages 2 to 14 can earn prizes by reading  library books. All they have to do is read one  book, magazine, or audio book and return it  to the Children's Department, where our teen volunteers will record each book read  on a special card, and eventually earn prizes for every 10 picture books or 500 chapter book pages read.

We will also be having programming during  the summer, too. Here are some programs that will happening next month in the Children's Dept at the Central Library. Please visit Library Events for information and register.

 Tween and Teen Volunteer Meeting-Wednesday, June at 4 pm or Thursday, June 4 at 6 pm 'Tweens and teens, ages 11 (must be 11 by August 2014) through 17, who are interested in volunteering during the library's Summer Reading Program, must attend a Volunteer Meeting in order to sign up. A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign a permission slip at the meeting.

Today's storytime was very colorful!! The group heard two stories ( Color Box by Dayle Dodds and I Ain't Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont). We also counted some monkeys and did some fun bubble wrap art.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds-Stars at Night

Hello, hope everyone had a good 4th of July weekend and ready for more fun at the library.

Today's 2 and 3 yr old story time was all about space. The kids heard three stories ( Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes, My Very First Look at Shapes by Christine Gunzi, and Quack! by Arthur Yorinks). We also rang some bells, learned about shapes, and made a rocket picture using a circle, rectangle, and triangle.

Our last 2 and 3 of the summer is July 21 at 10 am and 11:30 am- Color Magic ( Note- Because there is painting involved, please bring an old shirt or something to protect your clothes from stains).

This Wednesday at noon, we are showing Frozen ( " Do you want to build a snowman?"). In the coming Wednesdays, we're going to have Despicable Me 2, The Lego Movie, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.

Fizz Boom Read-All about the Sciences Bookworm List

This year's summer reading program theme, Fizz Boom Read!, is all about the sciences. We have programs featuring animals ( Dune National Lakeshore today at 1, Weird but Amazing Animals next Thursday at 4) and more. We had fun science experiments at our kickoff a few ago (and more to come July 10 at 4 pm). We even have science in our display case by the programming room ( featuring rocks and a telescope) and a minion named Curtis (yes, a minion, right at the Children's Desk).

Also on display are books from various areas of science ( we still have summer, now in the 123/ABC box). Some of the books  currently featured are:

• Can You Hitch a Ride on a Comet? by Sidney Rosen- Answers a variety of questions about comets including what they are, where they come from, and where they go.
• Forces Around Us by Sally Hewitt-  An introduction to  the concept of force as something that pushes or pulls and includes a discussion of such forces as gravity, wind, magnetism, weight, and water. 
•  Sun, Moon, and Stars by Stephanie Turnball- Simple introduction to space, including the sun, the moon, and the planets.
• Strange but True Animals by Lori Polydoros -Meet some unusual, like the blob fish and the aye-aye.
• Under the Ground by Daphne Butler- Exploring rocks and other things beyond the surface.
• Mystery of the Stone Circles by Paul Mason-Examines the phenomenon of stone circles and the various theories that exist to explain them. 
• Sea Clocks: The Story of Longitude by Louise Borden-Learn about John Harrison and the creation of sea clocks.
• The Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems by John Gold- Examining the circulatory and lymphatic systems and how they work.

For more books of the sciences, most are located in the 500s ( 520s is space and 590s is animals) and 600s ( health and the body).

So come down to Children's and explore the world of science!!!

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds: What's the Weather?

A big shout out to all that attended our Summer Reading Kickoff last Thursday. It was lots of fun and there is more fun to come.

Today's 2 and 3 yr old session (which was  at 10 am and repeated at  11:30 am) was all about the weather. The children heard three stories ( The Rainy Day by Felicia Law, Sam's Opposites by Yves Gott, and Totally Polar by Marty Crisp). We also rang bells and made a tropical snowman.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr old-Dino Stomp!!

For our last 2 and 3 of the summer, we dug up some dinosaurs. We heard two stories features the reptiles of long ago ( Tadpole Rex by Kurt Cyrus and Dig Those Dinosaurs by Lori Houran) and learned about colors ( The Color Box by Dayle Dodds). We also made a dinosaur with a movable tail.

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds-Big Truck Fun!!

For today's 2 and 3 yr old story time, we had some fun with some big construction trucks. We heard three books ( Construction Kitties by Judy Goodwin-Sturges, Kipper's Book of Opposites by Mick Inkpen, and On the Day the Tall Ships Sailed by Betty Paraskevas) and decorated some license plates with 4th of July stickers.

Here are some of the songs we did today-

Johnny Had One Hammer (song with motions) you have to be sitting down to do this song
While singing this verse make an up and down motion with one hand in a fist as if pounding a nail:

Storytime for 2 and 3 yr olds-Funny Bunnies

For today's 2 and 3 yr old story time, some funny bunnies came to the garden. We heard two stories ( You're Finally Here by Melanie Watt and When the World is Ready for Bed by Gillian Shields) and made a Funny Bunny paper bag puppet. We also did a few bunny activities, like the Bunny Pokey ( which is the Hokey Pokey, but with bunny actions).

Bookworm List: Summertime!!

A big shout out of thanks to all who came to yesterday's Summer Reading Kick-off. We had a really good turn out, and everyone had fun with the crafts, stories, and games ( including Twister!!!). It's been a good first week, and there's more to come.  Our Family Movie Days start this Wednesday at noon (please register at Library Events ) , and is open to all ages ( children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult 18 yrs or older) and you can bring a lunch or a snack ( No red or dark colored drinks!!)

It's summertime ( or when I was little " Summer Break-out")! The weather's good ( somewhat colder than what  it should be) and it's time for lazy days and lemonade. Why not check out some books about summer? Here are some recommended titles:

Storytime for 2 and 3-How does Your Garden Grow?

This week begins our Summer Reading Program, Dig into Reading. For our first 2 and 3 of the summer, we spent time in the garden with two books (Fran's Flower by Lisa Bruce and Follow Me by Tricia Tusa) and made a craft where the children trace their hand and turned into a flowerpot. We also counted some speckled frogs and waltzed with Walter the Waltzing Worm.

Our next storytime for 2 and 3 is Monday, June 17 at 10am and 11:30 am ( yes, during the summer, we do TWO sessions). Some funny bunnies will be visiting us.

 This Thursday, we have our Summer Reading Kick-off, from 2 -4 pm. It is open for ages 2-12 ( please register at Library Events ). We will celebrating the summer with games, crafts, and more!

Dig into Reading-June Programming

Summer is just around the corner, and so is the library's summer reading program. Starting June 3th, and continuing until July 27th, children ages 2 to 14 can earn prizes by reading  library books. All they have to do is read one  book, magazine, or audio book and return to the Children's Department, where our teen volunteers will record each book read  on a special card, and eventually earn prizes by every 10 picture books or 500 chapter book pages read.

We will also be having programming during  the summer, too. Here are some programs that will happening next month in the Children's Dept at the Central Library. Please visit Library Events for information and to register.

Mother Goose on the Loose - Tuesdays, June 4 and 18 at 10 am or 11:30 am
Audience: Infants 6-23 Months and caregiver.

Story Time for 2 and 3 yr Olds- Mondays at 10am or 11:30 am

June 17-Funny Bunnies
Audience:2 and 3 year olds and caregivers.

Next week is the last week of Summer Reading program 2012-Dream Big-Read! We hope everyone had a good time and that everyone keeps reading and coming to the library. Saturday, July 28th is the last day to turn books in for prizes. Please return all children's books to the book drop at the new, pretty Circulation desk after July 28th.

Here are our final three programs. Please register via the Library Calender at the www.lcplin.org or call 769-3541 ext 360.

  Blast Off! ( 4-5 yr old program) Tuesday, July 24th at 10 am or 2 pm

Family Movie Day (Happy Feet Two) All ages, please no dark or red-colored drinks- Wednesday July 25th at noon

Starry Starry Night ( K-5 and family program)- Thursday, July 26th at 4 pm ( Note-Because there is painting involved, children are asked to wear old clothes or paint shirts).


We will also be having a book exchange on Friday, July 27th from 2:30-4:30 pm. No registration is required for this program, open to infant to 6th grade. They are welcome to bring up to four gently-used books to exchange for four new gently-used books.

Music Review-Lullaby Round-up ( Part 3)

This is week six of Dream Big-Read. We still have about 3 ( or 2 1/2 half ) weeks of programs and turning in books for prizes ( today's program-Midnight on the Moon, 4 pm, for grades K-5.)

Back in June, I started a few reviews of lullaby CDs the library has to offer. Bookworm List-Dream Big, Read!!

This year's Summer Reading Program theme is Dream Big, Read!! For four weeks in June ( and four weeks coming next month), we have been doing programs on night-related topics, from things that go bump in the night, traveling to the moon and beyond the stars, and going to bed. We even have a program on the Twilight series ( going on  today at 4 pm, grades 3-5.)

We also have by the front entrance of the department night time-related books ( and a few lullaby CDs) for your check out pleasure. Here are some recommended titles:

• Arthur's Dream Boat by Polly Dunbar- One night, Arthur has an amazing dream about a pink and green boat with a striped mast and dotted sailes, a golden flag and pretty figurehead.
